Our South England Forest District team is made up of around 160 people and contains a diverse range of roles. From wildlife rangers to marketing professionals, we all contribute towards the management of some 46,000 hectares (ha) of public forest estate and national parks.

Much of this forest is of high national importance for nature conservation and wildlife, and of international importance for biodiversity. Our District is responsible for land that includes Special Areas of Conservation (SACs), Special Protection Areas (SPAs), Sites of Special Scientific Interest (SSSI), Ramsar sites, and Areas of Outstanding National Beauty (AONB).

The New Forest forms an important part of the land that we manage. The job holder will join a team that delivers a programme of landscape-scale habitat restoration across 20,000 ha of Crown Lands within the New Forest, supported by funding from the New Forest Higher Level Stewardship (HLS) scheme.

As Habitat Restoration Officer, you will oversee the delivery of an ambitious programme of work to improve the condition of these special habitats by planning and managing projects that will restore open habitats and pasture woodlands in the New Forest.

Purpose of the job:

  • Plan and manage the end-to-end delivery of habitat restoration projects in the New Forest SSSI
  • Build and maintain good communications with Forestry England colleagues, contractors, local stakeholders and others to enable delivery of the HLS restoration programme

Key work areas:

  • Plan a programme of habitat restoration projects in the New Forest
  • Prepare practical plans to deliver works such as tree felling, scrub management, rhododendron clearance, ridge and furrow removal
  • Engage with our staff and stakeholders to enable effective delivery of projects
  • Lead consultation site visits to get agreement for restoration proposals
  • Set up and manage contracts to deliver restoration projects on the ground
  • Provide site-specific technical advice and liaise with contractors to ensure high standards of safety
  • Report progress and monitor outcomes.
