A Unique Opportunity to Work in the Heart of the South Downs

Salary: £31,537 to £34,434 per annum (NJC SCP 18 – 23) depending on experience, plus Local Government Pension Scheme

Hours: 37 hours per week

Post: Permanent

Petersfield Town Council is excited to offer a new opportunity for an experienced Ranger to join our team and make a meaningful impact on the natural landscape in and around the historic market town of Petersfield, Hampshire.

Nestled within the South Downs National Park, Petersfield is surrounded by a diverse and ecologically rich countryside, ranging from heathlands and wildflower meadows to woodlands, streams and ponds. The role offers a chance to work in one of the most scenic and biodiverse areas in southern England, playing a vital role in conserving and enhancing it for generations to come.

We’re looking for an enthusiastic, self-motivated professional to plan, organise and deliver projects that achieve multiple goals across nature recovery, access for all and climate adaptation. A strong team working ethic along with well-developed negotiating and interpersonal skills are essential to ensure you can work effectively with colleagues, and local deliver the Council’s objectives.

You’ll be involved in a wide range of countryside management tasks, including the strategic development and delivery of the Council’s Management Plans and open spaces, and developing projects around landscape, biodiversity, recreation and community involvement.

Supported by the South Downs National Park Authority, this role uniquely involves close collaboration and integration with their local Ranger team, offering you the chance to be part of a wider network of countryside professionals, whilst enabling independent professional development.

What you'll need:

  • A degree, apprenticeship, or equivalent qualification in countryside management.
  • Proven experience in countryside management, knowledge of habitat types including grasslands, woodlands, heaths, streams and ponds.
  • The ability to plan, manage and deliver practical projects with a focus on multiple outcomes.
  • Strong team spirit and excellent interpersonal skills for effectively with colleagues and community partners.
