Location: Thames Chase Forest Centre, Broadfields, Pike Lane, Upminster, RM14 3NS
Contract: Permanent, full-time (37.5 hours per week)
Salary: £32,000 - £35,000 per annum
Thames Chase Community Forest was established in 1990 and connects 40 square miles of urban and rural landscape on the edge of east London and south-west Essex. It is one of twelve national Community Forests, known collectively as England's Community Forests.
In direct alignment with government policy, the network of England's Community Forests is entering a fresh phase of national and local landscape-scale developments with Thames Chase as the lead Forest in east London and south-west Essex.
Since 1990, more than 1.3 million trees have been planted; there has been a 70% increase in woodlands through new planting; and over 800 hectares of non-woodland habitat has been created or restored. In addition to volunteer and community engagement, improved access, and connectivity, this combines to create an impressive portfolio that has genuinely transformed landscapes and transformed lives, in accordance with the Thames Chase Plan.
The vision for Thames Chase Community Forest is: "Thames Chase Community Forest will be recognised as an inspirational example of landscape regeneration where enhanced, connected woodland and green space has made a clear difference to wildlife and peoples' lives."
This is remarkable but, it does not stop there. We have so much more to do. We are now planning beyond 2030 and this is where you come in. Thames Chase Trust is looking for an exceptional Community Forest Coordinator to support and when required, deputise for, the Thames Chase Community Forest Director in leading staff and volunteers to deliver the Thames Chase Plan.
You will need experience in community/urban forestry and to have delivered tree and woodland planting schemes from inception to completion. Ideally, this will also include experience of design, mapping and GIS. One of the key programmes you will be leading on is Trees for Climate. This is a new scheme funded by government and enables Thames Chase to provide funding to partners and landowners across the Community Forest to plant more trees and create new woodlands.
You will understand the planning process, how to respond to planning applications and the influence of the planning system on the landscape, particularly in relation to the Thames Chase Plan.
You will be experienced in partnership working and engagement to maximise resources and delivery.
As a key member of the Thames Chase Community Forest team, you will have the opportunity to work closely with the Thames Chase Community Forest Director to influence the development of the Forest, in accordance with the Thames Chase Plan.
Scope of the role
The role is based at the Thames Chase Forest Centre, home of Thames Chase Trust. The Forest Centre is surrounded by 40 square miles of Community Forest and located within the historical Broadfields Farm complex, with the addition of an architecturally acclaimed Visitors' Centre, built from sustainable resources.
You will work with the Thames Chase Community Forest Director to deliver the Thames Chase Plan and when required, to deputise for the Director. You will be responsible for line-managing the Programmes Manager and in working with the Director to oversee all operations in relation to projects, finance, business and administration, and the Forest Centre.
You will be familiar with the use of professional and social media and will need to be an exceptional communicator and an inspiring manager for an enthusiastic and knowledgeable team of staff and volunteers. You will know just how to get the very best out of everyone and to support and motivate the team. There are set targets for income, and you will be responsible for ensuring that the team meets these and the associated KPI's.
