Bat Survey Assistants (Casual)

I'm a Natural-England-registered bat consultant with 37 years' experience of working with these amazing animals. I'm looking for assistants to help on a casual basis with dusk-emergence and dawn return-to-roost surveys, mainly in and around Manchester/Lancashire, from May to September inclusive. Applications are accepted throughout, but please apply as soon as possible, to get the most from this learning opportunity.

This is casual work you can fit-in around your existing commitments, perhaps once or twice a week/fortnight. Short-term availability is acceptable. Dawn availability is particularly useful, as is availability for occasional weekend surveys (usually Saturday dawn or Sunday dusk).

Punctuality, reliability, good concentration skills and a professional approach are vital. Most reasonably-local applicants get the opportunity to participate. Due to the unsocial hours involved, access to a vehicle is usually necessary.

Existing experience of watching bats in flight and/or using a bat detector is not imperative, but without existing relevant experience of bat survey work, there will be a need to undertake one or more surveys on a voluntary basis until basic competence has been demonstrated.

Due to my level of experience, this provides a valuable learning opportunity for anyone venturing into bat consultancy or conservation work and can be a useful addition to your CV. There may be an opportunity to gain experience of other aspects of survey work on a mainly voluntary basis if desired.
