Estate and Operations Manager

An exciting opportunity for a self-motivated individual to join a family owned, and forward-thinking rural estate, located in a beautiful rural setting.

Cardross is a beautiful nominated and award-winning estate in the heart of Scotland, set on the fringe of the Scottish Highlands, Loch Lomond and the Trossachs National Park. Home to the Orr Ewing family, Cardross has 4,500 acres of parkland, woodland and farmland - a unique and historic setting.

Our full time Estate and Operations Manager would take on the day-to-day management and maintenance duties of a busy rural Estate working to Alastair Orr Ewing who has taken over the running of Cardross.

Business activities on the estates include:

  • A residential property portfolio
  • A let commercial shoot
  • In hand and tenanted farming
  • An array of hospitality ranging from B&B, Holiday Cottages and Glamping pods.
  • Events ranging from a successful music festival (Doune the Rabbit Hole), smaller scale bespoke events (e.g. private weddings) and projects (e.g. filming Outlander)
  • Forestry
  • Conservation initiatives (being home to Flanders Moss)

The role of the estate and operations manager is diverse and dynamic and they will be expected to participate in all of the above business streams with day to day responsibilities to include:

  • Overseeing and contributing to the smooth running, general upkeep and maintenance of the estate and its properties. Including but not exhaustive:
  • Land management (e.g. fencing, ditching)
  • Property management (e.g. basic joinery, plumbing, roofing, masonry repairs and painting)
  • Grounds management (e.g. grass cutting, weed spraying, tree planting and trimming)
  • Equipment care (e.g. basic servicing of estate machinery and maintaining servicing schedule)
  • Assistance to the running of the in hand and tenanted farming
  • Engaging with internal residents and tenants
  • Liaising with external stakeholders (e.g. statutory bodies such as SEPA and NatureScot)
  • Working with Cardross’ advisors (e.g. the estate Factor) and contractors
  • Development and management of project budgets
  • Recruitment and management of volunteers (e.g. Workaway)

The role includes a lot of sole working and so the successful candidate will be a self-motivated, well organised and adaptable individual with an eye for opportunity (both commercial and operational) with extensive experience in outdoor working as well as experience in some from of trade.

Essential skills:

  • Chainsaw licence (LANTRA)
  • Full UK Driving licence including trailer (i.e. Cat B+E)
  • Comfortable with moderate Microsoft Office
  • Experience in the operation of farming machinery (e.g. tractors and associated equipment)
  • Desirable:
  • Spraying qualification
  • 1st Aid trained
  • ATV certificate (LANTRA)
  • Digger operator qualified (no more than 8 ton)
