Ranger

Location: Mid Somerset, Barton Rocks, Winscombe, BS25 1DU

Contract Type: Permanent

Reference/IRC: IRC150282

Closing Date: 07/04/2024

Salary: £23,868 per annum

As a Ranger, you’re the heart and soul of the National Trust in the landscapes we protect. You’re a champion of nature conservation and the great outdoors, and you’ll play a crucial role in keeping the nation’s beloved countryside and coast in good shape, for wildlife and for people.

You should be willing to work some weekends, bank holidays and evenings, and be on call.

You will be reporting to the Area Ranger and also have the opportunity to help mentor our Ranger Apprentice.

Our Ranger role will be covering a collection of sites in Mid-Somerset. This role will be covering sites on the Mendip Hills and looking after the Polden Hills, Coast and Levels properties. This post will be based out of the Barton Office at the western end of the Mendip ridge and part of the wider Somerset Coast & Countryside team.

Poldens, Coast & Levels Stretching to 262ha this area hosts sites with a huge diversity rich in natural, cultural and historic heritage. Key sites include the two coastal headlands at Brean Down and Sand Point, important for their extensive limestone grassland, significant archaeology and prominence in the Severn Estuary.

Mendip Hills Covering 5 National Trust sites over 677ha within the Mendip Hills National Landscape and Mendip Hills NNR. Key sites include the karst landscape of Cheddar Gorge, extensive area of common land at Crook Peak and ancient woodland at King’s Wood.

You’ll be helping to protect and care for habitats, wildlife, buildings and machinery. Whenever and wherever you come across people, you’ll take the time to talk to them and answer their questions, rather than rushing away to the next task.

You’ll make sure that the conservation work and outdoor experiences on the land in your care are of the highest standard. You’ll build relationships in the local community, proudly representing the Trust and letting people know about the work you and the team are doing.

We’d love to hear from you if you’re:

  • practically experienced in conservation work, to protect and improve habitats and landscapes
  • happy to talk to all kinds of people about the work you’re doing, and why it matters
  • hard-working and willing to learn
  • able to work safely, using risk assessments and following guidelines
  • experienced in managing land, access and conservation, and working outdoors
  • able to use machinery and equipment, with relevant certificates
  • a driver with a full UK driving licence
