This role has a starting salary of £31,262 per annum, based on a 36-hour working week.

Are you looking for a varied role in the Countryside helping to maintain public rights of way in Surrey? An exciting opportunity has arisen for a full time Countryside Access Assistant in our Maintenance and Enforcement team, based in west Surrey.

About the Team

The Countryside Access team sits within our Environment, Infrastructure and Growth Directorate and looks after nearly 2,200 miles of public rights of way. We are responsible for maintenance and enforcement, improvement, and legal definition work across the network, and promoting countryside access and biodiversity.

About the Role

This role implements the County Council's statutory and priority countryside access duties, powers and responsibilities, including maintenance and inspections. We are seeking an enthusiastic self-starter, with a passion for the countryside and access to it for all. You will be very organised, with good IT and communication skills, be able to liaise with the public and landholders to find solutions to varied issues, and work with contractors, user groups, external agencies and volunteers to ensure our rights of way are safe and accessible.

Shortlisting Criteria

To be considered for shortlisting for this position, your application will clearly evidence the following:

  • An ability to flexibly manage and prioritise a varied and busy workload
  • Understanding of and enthusiasm for, rights of way and countryside access
  • An interest in practical rights of way maintenance, and countryside management techniques
  • Ability to drive or otherwise visit inaccessible locations, with equipment and sometimes at short notice, therefore, a valid driving license and access to a car is required
  • Ability to work outdoors in all weather and sometimes in difficult terrain
  • Flexibility to occasionally work weekends and evenings
