Today is the UN's International Volunteer Day

Held each year it is an opportunity for volunteers and organisations to celebrate their efforts, share values and promote the good work they do. It's generally accepted that volunteers are vital to the successful running of many charities and NGOs and as these organisations are the bedrock of the UK's nature conservation movement it's the volunteers that keep everything running smoothly.

The contribution volunteers make to our organisations can rarely be fully quantified, we talk about the number of ‘volunteer hours’ but occasionally we have real world data, for example in April this year a team of professional and amateur ecologists from BBOWT tallied up a whopping 43,349 snake’s-head fritillaries at the Trust's Iffley Meadows nature reserve.

Whilst BBOWT’s volunteers' efforts may have been confined to one day, albeit a very busy one, the volunteers of Cornwall Wildlife Trust’s, Marine Strandings Network celebrated 20 years in March, helping investigations into the lives of elusive and sometimes rare animals that live in the sea and are usually incredibly hard to study. The Trust says: Without these local and dedicated volunteers, this scientific data would not exist.

Every small action, no matter how ‘micro’ makes a difference and these tiny things grow into something much bigger as we found out on micro-volunteering day in April when we showcased a neighbour of the CJS Office, Cath Jenkinson, and how her book stall helps keep the Yorkshire Air Ambulance flying.
