JOB: Volunteer Cattle Checker

BE4: N / A

IV: 06/09/2019

LOC: Frogmore Meadows, Chenies, Hertfordshire

PAY: Travel expenses

FOR: Herts and Middlesex Wildlife Trust

To carry out a check once a week of Dexter cattle grazing the grassland at Frogmore Meadows Nature Reserve.  This can easily be combined with a general visit to the nature reserve. Grazing is essential to maintaining the rare wildlife of the meadow and welfare of the cattle must be maintained. The meadows are an interesting mixture of wet, floodplain meadow and dry acidic and chalk soil types. This results in a plethora of rare wildflower which require the grazing to knock back completive grasses and allow them the space they need to grow. It is harder to maintain meadows nowadays due to the decline in traditional farming methods. However, the Trust works hard to maintain the site using the Dexter cattle - a gentle, hardy breed of cattle who happily graze on Danemead’s varied grassland. ASK: To apply visit https://c-js.co.uk/2MMidkF. If you have any questions, you can contact Josh Wells, Senior Reserves Officer on 01727 858 901.
