Engagement Ranger (Ham Hill)

£24,496 to £27,852 per annum

Full Time

Stoke Sub Hambdon

Closing date 28 September 2023

Why should I choose Somerset Council?

We have an exciting opportunity for an Engagement Ranger to join the team at Ham Hill on a 3 year fixed-term contract to work on an exciting National Lottery Heritage Fund project. Apply now and become a valued member of the Countryside team at Somerset Council.

We are looking for someone with a passion for the natural world and a love of history to come and help tell the stories of Ham Hill, to and with our communities. Jobs like this do not come up very often and we are looking for someone special to combine excellent wildlife and heritage knowledge with an ability to communicate to a range of audiences.

What will I be doing?

We’re working to improve the lives of people in Somerset – and you’ll be a key part of that.

You will work with our countryside ranger team at the award-winning site, and our partners at the South West Heritage Trust, to inspire and engage people. You must be able to demonstrate confidence working with groups of all ages and abilities and be able to adapt to a variety of teaching and leading scenarios; from woodland wellbeing sessions in a forest, to more formal heritage tours. Experience of grant funded projects is necessary as the role comes with agreed Activity and Interpretation plans to deliver that include diverse engagement targets.

What kind of experience or qualifications do I need?

We offer ongoing support, training and guidance to help you be the best you can be. We're looking for someone with:

  • A passion for heritage and the environment
  • A relevant NVQ or equivalent qualification
  • Knowledge of countryside management, heritage landscapes, archaeology, geology and earth sciences
  • Experience of working on a busy countryside or heritage site
  • Experience of working with the public, user and volunteer groups
  • Experience of using social media in a professional setting
  • Experience of working on a grant funded project
  • Proven delivery of inspiring events and activities to schools or community groups

We’re proud to be here for the people of Somerset. And that means everyone in Somerset. An important part of this is ensuring that we are as diverse and inclusive as the people and communities we serve.

We welcome applications from a diverse range of backgrounds and experiences to enrich our team. You can always contact the hiring manager for a chat if there’s anything you want to talk about before you apply.

What will I be offered in return?

We are proud to offer an environment that is supportive and rewarding, working as part of a team who are passionate about the work they do to improve the lives of people in Somerset.

We offer great training and development opportunities, with supportive management. As well as this, we have some fantastic employee benefits available:

  • We promote a healthy work-life balance and offer flexible working arrangements wherever possible, including working from home.
  • Generous annual leave allowance, with the opportunity to purchase additional leave
  • Staff discounts in gyms.
  • Employee Assistance for the times you may need some support and a variety of employee wellbeing services.
  • Auto enrolment onto our generous Pension Scheme and optional pension enhancement through our Additional Voluntary Contribution scheme.
  • A Flexible Benefits Scheme via salary sacrifice to obtain a cycle for work and health screenings.
  • My Staff Shop offering discounts in shops, online shopping, restaurants, cinema tickets, insurance benefits and more
