Contract Type: Permanent Contract

Closing Date: 30th September 2022

Salary: £21,684 per annum

In your role as a ranger, you will help to keep the British countryside and coast wonderful. Working within a breath-taking landscape, come rain or shine, your love of the outdoors will inspire others as you strive to ensure that our sites deliver for nature and are beautifully presented.

Our ranger team are focussed on the trust’s land and nature strategy and throughout all our work we seek to improve our land for nature conservation. A strong focus on countryside access provides visitors with the chance to engage with the natural world.

We manage areas of flower rich coastal grassland and heathland with our in-hand herd of Shetland ponies who graze across our coastal sites, whilst working with grazing partners to graze traditional cattle breeds. We are in the early days of an exciting project at Godrevy farm where we are working to improve the farm for wildlife by moving away from an intensive arable system to one that works with and enhances the surrounding habitats for the benefit of wildlife. We carry out habitat management work across our heathland sites and regular access and infrastructure work to maintain and enhance the network of paths on our property. We manage a team of volunteers who check our ponies and monitor key species across our sites.

We manage two of National Trust’s busiest car parks in the South-west at Godrevy and Chapel Porth, re-surfacing, repairing and keeping the sites well-presented throughout the year.

You’ll help manage our sites for the benefits of nature conservation and access, enabling visitors to connect with them and our cause. You look after and maintain our property and machinery and engage with visitors across our sites.

In this role, you may work some weekends, bank holidays and evenings or be on-call.

You’ll need to;

  • Deliver practical conservation work to protect and enhance the conservation status of the property
  • Demonstrate a passion for nature, heritage and the outdoors
  • Able to engage with visitors to ensure they understand the value of our work
  • Be able to work safely, with risk assessments and compliance with safety procedures
  • Experience in a land, access and conservation management
  • Experience in and working in a similar outdoor setting
  • Competence with machinery and equipment as well as having the relevant certificates required
  • A full UK driving licence
