Summary

Working in some of the nation’s most stunning places and spaces, come rain or shine, your love of the outdoors will inspire others as you strive to ensure that landscapes are beautifully presented and continue to take our visitors’ breath away.

What it's like to work here

Arlington is a large 2700-acre lowland estate in the heart of North Devon, that has a drive and ambition to do more for nature, people, and climate. 8km of the River Yeo meander through the estate, edged by conifer and broadleaf woodland which stretches up the steep sides of the river valley, and opens out into farmland above.

What you'll be doing

You would be joining an ambitious team, who are working to break the hard lines between monocultured habitats, softening edges and creating a more mosaiced, and dynamic landscape. This includes the planting of trees, encouraging species rich grassland and trailing techniques to slow water flows and reconnect watercourses with their floodplains. Tasks will be varied and could include anything from tree guard building to leaky dam erection.

Due to the scale of the projects, working with others will be key to delivering crucial elements of our ambition, so experience of leading volunteer groups and engaging contractors to deliver successful practical outcomes will be necessary.

We're a small team who work closely to deliver multiple outcomes for nature and people in proximity, therefore, excellent communication skills, a flexible and open mindset, and willingness to work collaboratively as part of a team is essential

In this role, you’ll work some weekends, bank holiday and evenings and being on-call.

Who we're looking for

We'd love to hear from you if you can:

  • Deliver practical conservation work to protect and enhance the conservation status of the property.
  • Demonstrate a passion for nature, heritage and the outdoors.
  • Be able to engage with visitors to ensure they understand the value of your work.
  • Help create a great place to work, share common goals, and be an excellent team player.
  • Be enthusiastic with a willingness to learn.
  • Be able to work safely, with risk assessments and compliance with safety procedures.
  • Experience in and working in a similar outdoor setting.
  • Competence with machinery and equipment as well as having the relevant certificates required, and a full UK driving licence
