Livestock Ranger

This is a fixed term contract for approximately 8 months.
Location: Woolbeding Estate, Midhurst, West Sussex, GU29 9RR

As Livestock ranger you'll be expected to carry out daily checks of our livestock across various sites in the South Downs West.

What it’s like to work here

Woolbeding Estate in West Sussex is quietly tucked away in the tranquil Rother Valley. With its wide horizons and intimate secluded places, this huge estate has an extraordinary blend of habitats. To the north are the wild and open greensand hills and commons. To the south, visitors can take in glorious views from the parkland and wander along the River Rother with its steep-sided woods and pasture.

What you’ll be doing

We care for the livestock that sculpt the natural landscape and ensure high welfare standards are adhered to. Conservation grazing is important to maintain natural habitats and increase biodiversity. The use of our livestock ensure the removal of vegetation gradually as opposed to mechanical removal. A hands on approach is important and essential to the job role and experience moving and handling livestock is a must. The nature of our system relies on temporary fencing and regularly moving the stock to new grazing parcels.

Visitor engagement is important as well. Answering any questions the public may have about the use of livestock for nature conservation.

You’ll also share and promote the work that we do here, ensuring special places like these are here to be both protected and enjoyed by everyone for ever. This will see you responding to queries and explaining the value of the work being undertaken.

In this role, you’ll work occasional weekends, and may asked to be on-call, but generally your working pattern is from 8am- 5pm (with a lunch break).

For any questions or queries you have about the role please email Ed Mitchell, Farm Manager on
