The defence estate covers over 220,000ha in the UK and is widely considered to be one of the best land holdings for biodiversity. You will provide advice on ecological issues for the estate within the South East of England and potentially within other parts of the UK estate or overseas. You will support military operations by ensuring that they are compliant with wildlife legislation and policy and provide advice to a wide range of internal and external stakeholders.

You will be expected to undertake a wide variety of proactive land management work (habitat restoration/creation) and reactive development management casework, (advising on projects requiring planning consent and other regulatory permissions).  You will involve quality assurance of work carried out by specialist consultants and there will be opportunities for you to undertake some ecological survey work.

You will support MOD infrastructure developments and operations; act as the Competent Authority for Habitats Regulations Assessments; secure Site of Special Scientific Interest assents from Natural England for a range of defence activities and develop a costed and prioritised designated sites programme of improvement works.

You will also support development of nature recovery plans and designated site management plans; provide guidance to help deliver natural capital projects, such as woodland creation and nutrient management across the estate, undertake audits and occasional incident investigations of land management. Stakeholder engagement at a local, regional and where appropriate, national level will be a key part of the role.

Full driving licence - essential as travel to remote locations which are not served by public transport will be required.


This is a highly specialist role requiring a relevant degree in ecology, biology, botany or a related natural science subject.


Associate membership of CIEEM or relevant experience of working as a professional ecologist.
