Assistant Ranger

Location: Ashridge Estate, Visitor Centre, Berkhamstead, HP4 1LT

Contract Type: Permanent contract

Reference/IRC: IRC127717

Closing Date: 25th September 2022

Salary: £20,124 per annum

We’re looking for an Assistant Ranger to join our Ashridge team and help to deliver our ambitious work programme of habitat management, restoration and creation. The role is highly practical, and you’ll be working in a stunning landscape of extensive woodlands and chalk grasslands.

Ashridge Estate contains the largest area of woodland managed in-hand by the National Trust and one of the largest expanses of chalk grassland in the Chilterns. We look after over 1000 veteran trees and associated nationally important saproxylic invertebrate population. Our chalk grassland is home to rare species including Duke of Burgundy and Pasqueflower. In a relatively built-up area of the country, this is a rare opportunity to make a positive impact on large-scale conservation, across multiple land designations including SSSI, SAC and Grade II* listed Parkland.

It is an exciting time to be joining the ranger team with projects underway to restore more areas of chalk grassland, manage our nationally significant collection of veteran trees, restore ancient woodland sites, and create new woodpasture habitats.

With your endless passion for our work, you’ll help with the protection and care of habitats, wildlife, property and machinery, and your passion will inspire others to love this beautiful place as much as you do.

Reporting to an Area Ranger, you’ll be involved in all aspects of our outdoor work including chalk grassland management, scrub control, halo-thinning of veteran trees, and thinning of plantation woodlands - often leading teams of volunteers to help achieve these objectives. You'll also help to maintain the estate infrastructure and extensive rights of way network, while ensuring that visitors have a first-rate experience at Ashridge.

Who we're looking for

To be successful in this role, you'll need to have:

  • Practical experience in land, conservation and access management, to level 2 (or equivalent level of vocational experience).
  • CS30/CS31 equivalent in chainsaw maintenance, cross cutting and small tree felling.
  • Experience in using a variety of machines such as brushcutter, pedestrian mower, tractors and associated implements.
  • Practical estate management skills such as fencing and gate installation.
  • A proven track record of working with volunteers, preferably with experience of leading work parties.
  • Good people skills – the ability to build and maintain strong relationships internally with colleagues, and externally.
  • Habitat management experience in a woodland and grassland context and a demonstrable passion for wildlife and nature conservation.
