Hampshire County Council Countryside Service is recruiting a Countryside Ranger to manage Wellesley Woodlands, a fantastic 110ha of public green space and the largest Suitable Alternative Natural Greenspace (SANG) currently in the UK, located in Aldershot. You'll be based within the Blackwater Valley Countryside Partnership (BVCP) team, who manage the site and work in partnership with the Land Trust, a national green space charity who lease the land and other organisations including TCV, Grainger and the Ministry of Defence. This is an exciting opportunity to develop a flagship site.
Your responsibilities will include practical habitat management, enhancement and conservation, site-based improvement projects, public access, safety checks and supervising assistant rangers and volunteers. You'll also be involved in the implementation, monitoring and updating the management plan. You're also responsible for regular reporting of tasks and projects carried out on site both in digital format and at face to face and online meetings.
As a good communicator, you'll be capable and confident dealing with queries and concerns from site visitors, partners and colleagues. You'll have the ability to work productively as part of a team as well as on your own initiative and have an awareness of statutory health and safety policies and other appropriate legislation.
Ideally you'll have a relevant degree or equivalent qualification, experience in similar countryside-related work and relevant experience and qualifications for tree felling, brush cutter use, tractor driving, trailer driving, hedge trimmer, ride-on mower and pesticide use. Experience of minor construction jobs, such as bridges and fencing; and setting-up and running a volunteer group would also be desirable. You will be required to drive a Council vehicle and must hold a current full drivers’ licence.
Whilst this role mostly involves outdoor working there is an element of administration. All Hampshire County Council Staff are following current government guidelines around homeworking where possible. It is expected that a blend of home and office attendance will continue.
