Planting for Pollinators Project Officer (Ecologist)

£26,429 plus 9% Pension Contribution

Cumbria Wildlife Trust is seeking a project officer to lead the ecological work of the Planting for Pollinators project in northern Cumbria.

Planting for Pollinators is a Cumbria Local Nature Partnership project hosted by Cumbria Wildlife Trust and Cumbria County Council and funded by the Green Recovery Challenge Fund. The project is based at the Trust’s offices in Houghton just outside Carlisle.

The successful applicant will work with project partners to:

  • Work closely with partners and contractors to improve roadside verges for pollinators by informing management regimes and demonstrating potential for biodiversity uplift.
  • Undertake a programme of baseline surveys, finalise restoration plans and develop management plans for roadside verges and community sites.
  • Appoint and manage contractors to carry out habitat restoration/creation works.
  • Respond to requests from the project team or the public for ecological advice.
  • Deliver ecological training for the project as identified by the Training and Skills Officer.
  • Work with the Trust’s Nursery Manager to pre-plan for planting on project sites and assist project partners in undertaking this work.
  • Help to establish a seed bank as part of the National Seed Bank Network and to collect and store seed of local provenance.
  • Work with Cumbria Biodiversity Data Centre and Cumbria Local Nature Partnership to develop a pollinator strategy for Cumbria based on the Local Nature Recovery Strategy.
  • Work closely with the project’s Community Engagement Officer hosted by Cumbria County Council.
  • Undertake project recording, monitoring and evaluation of work delivered.

The successful candidate will ideally demonstrate significant relevant experience, ideally with a recognised conservation organisation. Experience of partnership working, habitat restoration/creation and working with contractors is essential as is a good understanding of pollinator ecology.

They will understand the importance of connecting people with nature and have good GIS skills and experience of habitat survey to at least Phase 1 level. They will be well organised, able to prioritise work and meet deadlines. They must be able to work as part of a dynamic team and be personally effective with a can-do attitude.
