About the job:
We have never needed trees and forests more. They can help tackle the climate emergency and provide a much-needed sanctuary for people and wildlife. The Government of the United Kingdom has recognised this and has committed to creating 30,000 hectares of woodland a year across the UK by the end of this Parliament. This acceleration in woodland creation rates in England will help meet the net-zero by 2050 ambition and is supported by the £640m Nature for Climate Fund (NCF) announced in the March 2020 budget.
The Department for the Environment, Food & Rural Affairs (Defra) and the Forestry Commission have set up a joint NCF tree programme for England to deliver these ambitions. If you are passionate about the role of forestry in creating a better future for England and want to play a key part in delivering this, we want to hear from you.
Forestry England is part of The Forestry Commission and for over 100 years, we have been growing, shaping and caring for over 1,500 of our nation’s forests for the benefit and enjoyment of all, for this generation and the next. We care for more land and trees than any other organisation in England, we shape landscapes for people, wildlife and timber, we’ve built over 1,800 miles of walking, running and cycling trails and we provide the largest source of sustainably grown timber in England. We want to do more and as part of the NCF tree programme we will be expanding the nations forests by creating new woodland on leasehold sites.
The Operations Manager – Woodland Creation is a new position within Forestry England’s National Woodland Creation Team. You will provide national leadership on forest management for new woodland creation across England. You will use your professional knowledge and experience to provide management oversight and technical guidance to staff on operational delivery across a portfolio of woodland creation schemes across England. You will be responsible for ensuring that all woodland creation schemes meet the requirements of UKFS and UKWAS and comply with EIA and planning requirements. We need you to build productive relationships with a range of stakeholders and influence and negotiate challenging and competing demands.
If you are ready for the challenge of contributing to these high-profile commitments, we want to hear from you!
As Operations Manager – Woodland Creation, you will be driving our delivery of the Forestry England Woodland Partnership. Using your forestry expertise, you will provide national leadership on forest management and woodland creation to ensure rapid delivery of a large portfolio of new and high quality woodland creation sites. There is an expectation that travel across England will be required with occasional overnight stays necessary.
