Marine Officer, Solent Seagrass Project

Full Time - 35 hours per week

Fixed Term Contract for 12 months with potential for extension subject to funding

Salary: £23,500 per annum

The Hampshire and Isle of Wight Wildlife Trust is a grassroots movement working for nature’s recovery and to bring people closer to nature.

We are seeking a Marine Officer, Solent Seagrass Project to join our cause.

You’ll need to be comfortable working as part of a team on a multi-faceted project as well as being comfortable working on your own or leading groups of volunteers.

To work towards our vision of a wilder future and 30% of land and sea restored for nature HIWWT has joined forces with Boskalis Westminster to undertake a seagrass restoration project within the Solent, beginning with an important research and development phase. We want to see seagrass habitats in the Solent restored towards their historical levels and for seagrass to be present in all locations that could support it. By restoring seagrass habitats, we will create a wilder Solent, supporting increased biodiversity and sustainable fisheries, promoting greater ecosystem services, cleaner water and creating a natural carbon solution to mitigate the effects of climate change. This project sits alongside our other marine work, delivered through the lottery-funded Secrets of the Solent project and the ReMEDIES project in partnership with Natural England.

This full time, fixed term role involves:

Day to day

  • Co-ordinate and deliver seagrass surveys, as agreed with the Senior Specialist – Marine Conservation
  • Co-ordinate and organise volunteers who are helping with the project
  • Train and support volunteers as required
  • Deliver other project activities as needed
  • Developing and maintaining key partnerships with a broad range of groups

Job Specification/Scope of Role

  • Travel will be required around the Trust sites
  • A full, clean driving licence is required.

  • Marine biology knowledge and experience
  • Ability to talk confidently on marine issues
  • Sound knowledge and understanding of marine issues
  • Excellent planning, organisational and time management skills
  • Capable of working as part of a team and across the wider organisation
  • Ability to work under pressure and meet deadlines
