Lake District National Park Authority

Habitat Conservation and Engagement Officer

Habitat Conservation and Engagement Officer (2 posts)
Windermere, Cumbria, UK
Full time, fixed term contract until March 2023
Brockhole the Lake District Centre for Nature Conservation and Connection

This project is funded by the government's Green Recovery Challenge Fund. The fund is being delivered by The National Lottery Heritage Fund in partnership with Natural England and the Environment Agency.

These two new posts are part of this exciting new project to make Brockhole the Lake District Centre for Nature Conservation and Connection. The project is a partnership between The Lake District National Park Authority and The Ernest Cook Trust. It has three central aims: to improve the management and interpretation of the site's priority habitats; to engage young people with these through exploration of their wildlife and practical conservation work; and to train young people in land-based skills through a trainee programme run by the Ernest Cook Trust, equipping them for a future career in environmental management.

To ensure the successful delivery of this exciting new initiative in the Lake District National Park, we are looking for experienced outdoor practitioners, both with skills in practical conservation work and habitat restoration/management, along with proven experience of working with young people outdoors in a nature conservation/interpretation context.

You will be working with our Head Gardener to identify practical tasks that are appropriate for young people to be involved with, and delivering sessions that fun, safe and clearly focussed on skill development, nature conservation and exploration. To drive this project forward within the short time frame, you will have prior experience of creating, delivering and marketing great outdoor learning experiences for school-aged young people which connect them with nature and inspire them to care for it.

You will be working closely with the Learning and Engagement staff at Brockhole to ensure that the learning programme meets the project criteria regarding new audiences, and dovetails with the existing environmental education programme on site which operates both in term time and holiday periods. You will also be working with other LDNPA staff to develop interpretation materials for the public in the key habitats identified for the project.

Weekend working will be required, and the post holder will be subject to an enhanced level DBS check.

If you have the right knowledge and experience, matched with a friendly, outgoing personality that enables you to engage with young people, then we'd love to hear from you.
