Conservation Officer

Salary: £27,500
Contract: Initially 1 year (potential for extension)

The Shallowford Trust is seeking an enthusiastic and engaging Conservation Officer to develop and deliver an ambitious conservation programme for East Shallowford Farm and Butterfly Conservation. Working with groups of youth who visit the farm, reaching out to new networks as well as continuing work with existing community contacts, providing opportunities for skills development and increasing knowledge in conservation forms much of the work. Programme development will include identifying new opportunities for habitat restoration and influencing positive management in the local landscape through land management advice, working with multiple local partnerships.

The Shallowford Trust is a Dartmoor based charity that has worked with disadvantaged youth for over forty years, to engage, encourage and challenge assumed norms catalysing positive change through physical work and practical engagement.

As part of our current Strategic Plan, Green Recovery Funding has been secured through the Heritage Lottery Funding with the aim of developing a programme for long term youth and community engagement in activities to help bio-diversity and practical conservation, to encourage the marsh fritillary butterfly whilst also developing enthusiasm and skills with our youth groups.

About you:

  • Engaging, fun and enthusiastic with youth from the ages of 8+
  • Have good technical knowledge and field experience in conservation with skills that can be upgraded if needed.
  • Be an excellent communicator and networker across a broad range of community and youth groups.
  • Work well in teams.
  • Excellent planning and organisational skills.
  • Be willing to work on a flexible time schedule.

  • Take overall responsibility for ESF’s Conservation Programme, identifying, planning and delivering the programme, and providing technical advice to farmers on management and restoration of species rich grassland.
  • Deliver a programme of high quality outdoor conservation based, educational and residential experiences that are attractive to a broad demographic of young people, older community members and families.
  • Liaise with the local farmer network bringing ESF’s visiting groups to sites to assist with conservation work, engaging disadvantaged groups and the local community wherever possible, taking care to ensure best practice.
  • Lead and support ESF volunteers and groups to deliver conservation objectives and activities working on site at ESF and at local farms, schools or within community hubs.
  • Support BC in the monitoring of habitat quality and Marsh Fritillary populations.

A full, clean driving license and car is essential.
