What’s the role about

This is a 12-month post, with the potential of longer term subject to funding. The role focuses on the tree resource centred around the Dyfi Valley and wider area, which has some of Wales’ most specular scenery and the species to match. This role will be starting to deliver the co-designed Tir Canol Blueprint, with a focus on woodlands including Western Atlantic Oak Woods:

  • Analyse what is already known of the tree resource in the area
  • Deliver habitat surveys for, and with, landowners of their tree resource and species which incorporates their knowledge and ambitions
  • Engage with the public forestry in the area to support sustainable forestry management
  • You will sit within the Tir Canol team, working together and meeting regularly with each other at a location to be confirmed.

Key activities:

  • Survey work, including using the Woodland Wildlife Toolkit and selected species surveys
  • Habitat assessment (to phase 1 level) and action plan alongside landowners for possible opportunities
  • Liaising with external partners and stakeholders across the Dyfi and wider area developing relationships locally within organisations and communities
  • Identifying woodland creation and restoration opportunities

You will work from home in the geographical area of the project. The successful applicant will be required to travel within this area.

What we need from you

You need to be brilliant with people, and projects. You’ll need good knowledge of wildlife and habitat management in Wales. You’ll need good people skills to work in a co-productive approach, and strong analytical skills to digest information and pick out critical points for delivery of the Tir Canol Blueprint. A passion for connecting people to wildlife and enabling them to take action to protect the natural world is important for this role.

The ability to speak Welsh would be desirable for this role, however, if you’re not a fluent Welsh speaker having an understanding of Welsh names and correct pronunciation would be a distinct advantage, as you’ll be working with Welsh speakers on a regular basis.
