Policy Officer - Oxford and Cambridge Arc

Location: Flexible in the UK
Salary: £27,574 - £30,590 per annum
Benefits: Standard
Contract: Fixed Term for 16 months, Full-Time at 37 hours per week

Do you want to make a difference for nature and people? Could you use your policy/advocacy skills to drive outcomes for nature? Do you have the partnership skills to build a coalition of like-minded organisations? Do you have the campaigning skills to equip local communities to show politicians how much nature matters?

We're looking for a Policy Officer to join our team at an exciting time to help influence the future of nature.

What is the Oxford-Cambridge Arc, and why is it important?

The Oxford-Cambridge Arc is a major infrastructure and housing initiative, driven by the UK Government/local leaders to link the economic powerhouses of this region. RSPB is committed to maintaining pressure on the UK Government to ensure all development in the Arc is within environmental limits. We expect the Arc to meet the standards of environmental decision-making, but early signals from government are disappointing. Now is the moment to engage in both national/local frameworks, with the Spatial Frameworku2019s consultation period currently planned to run until the end of 2022.

What will you be working on?

  • Leading development/delivery of the Rethink the Arc campaign and working with NGO partners
  • Working with colleagues to develop/advocate RSPB policy to MHCLG/Defra on the OxCamArc
  • Working with the OxCam Arc Environment sub-group and local leaders
  • Engaging with the Natural England-led Arc BNG group
  • Building relationships with community groups

Which key skills and experience will we be looking for?

  • Excellent team building skills
  • Partnership/relationship-building skills
  • Analysing government policy
  • Ability to develop policy positions based on sound evidence/expertise
  • Developing advocacy strategies and political instincts
  • Written/Verbal communication skills
  • Advocacy skills with demonstrable experience to local/national government
  • Understanding of the role of public-facing campaigning/communications in influencing advocacy outcomes

The RSPB reserves the right to extend or make this role permanent without further advertising. This role can be conducted remotely with the occasional travel to meetings.

This role is covered by the Rehabilitation of Offenders Act 1974.
