Ecology Technical Director

Avian Ecology is looking for a new Ecology Technical Director.

The successful candidate will be based in our Lower Stretton (near Warrington) office, although an element of remote / home working will be available.

We are looking for someone with high level technical experience in ecology and consultancy to join our leadership team. The successful candidate will have strong communication skills and will be joining an experienced team with an existing and growing portfolio of projects. As Technical Director they will help further the development and direction of the business and manage our excellent Ecology team.

The key skills and responsibilities for this role are:

  • Day to day team management, including recruitment, development and appraisal, and training of individuals;
  • Technical input and review of projects to maintain high quality standards;
  • Maintain a clear overview of emerging ecology issues, legislation and policy to direct Avian Ecology’s service delivery and its valued advisory role for clients;
  • Long-term planning to achieve quality, sales and profit targets;
  • Management of systems to ensure effective financial project control;
  • Monthly reporting to the Managing Director on sales/profit and quality performance.

Other skills and requirements include:

  • Experience in Project Management and delivery of a wide range of Ecological Projects;
  • Delivery of Ecological assessments for a range of public and private sector clients;
  • Able to provide robust, pragmatic and cost-effective advice to clients;
  • Input into cross-disciplinary projects (e.g., Hydrology, Landscape, Environmental Impact Assessment, Design & Engineering);
  • High-level liaison skills with clients, regulators, sub-contractors and colleagues; and,
  • Ability to maintain and develop positive client relationships and build our project portfolio.
  • Candidates must be self-motivated and organised, able to work closely within a team and demonstrate 7+ years’ experience in ecological consultancy including working at a principal/senior level.

The following criteria are essential for the role:

  • Passion and enthusiasm for Ecology and for people, and a commitment to developing the careers of others;
  • Experience of successful team leadership and development;
  • Consultancy experience including Project Management and delivery of large-scale projects;
  • Honours or Master’s degree in Ecology or relevant discipline;
  • Chartered, or in the process of/willing to work towards chartership
  • Strong understanding of relevant legislation and guidelines across the UK;
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills; and,
  • a Full Drivers’ licence.

This is a permanent position based at our offices in Lower Stretton (south of Warrington) in Cheshire. The successful candidate must live within commuting distance or be prepared to relocate, as this leadership role requires a regular office presence. An element of remote/flexible working will be considered.
