We're looking for someone who is passionate about conservation delivery. Someone with real vision and commitment to help deliver conservation work. 

What's the role about

The post will concentrate on our Priority Landscape work focusing on Elenydd-Mallaen. Areas of work the post will focus on:

  • Curlew and other species
  • Western Atlantic Woodlands
  • Upland management
  • Landscape scale conservation 

As Conservation Officer you'll work closely with the Senior Conservation Officer for South Wales, conservation staff including those working on the Curlew LIFE/Celtic Rainforest LIFE programme to help species /habitats.

Key Activities:

  • Organising/taking part in surveys 
  • Liaising with external partners/stakeholders across landscapes to develop/manage conservation projects
  • Lead direction for the landscape, through the Landscape plan.
  • Developing relationships  

You'll work with a range of specialists. Priority landscapes are separated by distance which will require working from a home base.

What we need from you

As a Conservation Officer for South Wales your work will be focused within the Landscape. You'll be responsible for building relationships on the ground, ecological knowledge, driving forward/developing a landscape plan.

Essential qualifications:

  • Degree level in a relevant subject or ability to show work experience

Essential knowledge:

  • Understanding species and habitats; landscape scale conservation, relevant policy/legislation within Wales
  • Delivery mechanisms for conservation work 

Essential skills:

  • Work as a team 
  • Excellent communications skills (verbal and written)  
  • Analysing information, meeting deadlines

Essential experience:

  • Negotiating with the public/private sector, to deliver benefits
  • To protect and manage important sites/species/habitats
  • Managing staff/volunteers and work priorities.
  • Partnership working

Desirable qualifications, knowledge, skills and experience:

  • Use of GIS
  • Confident advocating a position to people who have different views
  • Public engagement work
  • Project management
  • Conservation knowledge
  • Understanding the concept of landscape conservation and the pressures on land use 

Candidates must be in a suitable location and be able to travel between priority landscapes.
