The Wiltshire and Swindon Biological Records Centre (WSBRC) is looking for someone who is proficient using GIS, with knowledge of ecology and experience of botanical surveying to update the Ancient Woodland Inventory for Wiltshire. The post offers a great opportunity to build working relationships with staff and volunteers from Wiltshire Wildlife Trust, biological recorders, other NGOs and key stakeholders across the county, and make a significant contribution to the conservation and protection of irreplaceable ancient woodland habitat.

The post holder will be someone who is able to use their knowledge and skills to undertake a complete revision of the Ancient Woodland Inventory for Wiltshire and Swindon via GIS analysis of current data sources, and determining ancient woodland status by sourcing and interpreting additional evidence (e.g. historic maps). There will also be a field-survey component, in collaboration with expert botanists, to ground truth the desk-based research including surveying for ancient woodland/wood-pasture indicator plants or other features.

We are looking for a candidate who is organised and motivated, with a keen interest in ancient woodland ecology. They will be an excellent team-worker with the ability to work on their own initiative and able to build and maintain strong working relationships with key stakeholders.

The successful candidate will produce a substantially updated Inventory, using a consistent and quality controlled methodology (as defined by Natural England) to create an accurate record of ancient woodland and ancient wood-pasture in Wiltshire. The output of the project is a GIS dataset, produced to agreed data standards, and a written report.

Hosted by Wiltshire Wildlife Trust (WWT), WSBRC has catalogued and stored biodiversity information for the past 46 years. The WSBRC promotes and supports biological recording and monitoring and is part of a national network of Local Environmental Records Centres. It gathers, manages, interprets and disseminates a wide range of biological and geological information and works with a range of partners to deliver recording, monitoring and citizen science projects within Wiltshire. The project is made possible due to grant-funding from Natural England and the Woodland Trust.
