Summary

This is an exciting opportunity to develop our Tree Nursery operations, nurturing National Trust Northern Ireland's contribution to the delivery of the Trust's national plan to plant 20m trees in the fight against climate change.

As Tree Nursery Project Officer you’ll be responsible for the day-to-day management of the tree nursery based in a historic walled garden at Mount Stewart. You'll source seed and grow trees for conservation projects across the Northern Ireland properties.

You’ll be working directly with our Trees & Woodland Advisor for Northern Ireland and liaising with the Head Gardener for Mount Stewart and Northern Ireland countryside teams.

What it's like to work here

Working with passionate people at inspiring places, you'll have the opportunity to make a difference every day.

Your contractual location will be Mount Stewart, Newtownards. However, there will be an opportunity to explore and agree hybrid working arrangements which strike the right balance for you and the Trust. The role will also involve travel to properties or regional hubs to meet with stakeholders and deliver your role.

What you'll be doing

You’ll be a key member in our region-wide Land and Nature team and will work closely with the Mount Stewart Garden team and our countryside teams across Northern Ireland to identify seed sources from our nationally important trees, including ancient and veteran trees and our historic collections, producing trees of quality from known provenances.

You'll manage the day-to-day running of the tree nursery with the support of volunteers and the Mount Stewart Garden team. You'll support volunteer groups in running the nursery and seed collection, helping them to enjoy their time here and making the most of their contribution.

Who we're looking for

  • Experience of record keeping, including knowledge of plant passports and Forestry Reproductive Material
  • Experience of working with volunteers and managing a team of volunteers
  • Ability to deliver through teams including volunteers, external contractors and colleagues outside your team
  • Excellent project management and IT/Database skills
  • Can work safely, with risk assessments and compliance with safety procedures
  • Ability to travel within Northern Ireland to properties which are in remote locations
