Job description

From ancient woodlands to flower-rich grasslands and regionally important wetlands, Gateshead boasts a rich natural heritage including 8 Sites of Special Scientific Interest, 13 Local Nature Reserves and over 100 Local Wildlife Sites.

Gateshead Council is a progressive Local Authority where the protection, restoration and enhancement of the Natural Environment is a key objective. The Council is seeking a qualified Ecologist to join its multi-disciplinary Built and Natural Environment Team on a fixed-term basis until 31.05.2024, with the potential for extension subject to funding.

The successful applicant will have the opportunity to work across a variety of workstreams. The job requires an enthusiastic and knowledgeable person who can support the development management process, whilst providing ecological support and advice in relation to the management of Council assets, maintenance programmes and infrastructure projects. You will also be required to input into the preparation of biodiversity and nature conservation policies, strategies and funding bids.

You must have a working knowledge of ecology and the natural environment, including all relevant legislation, and preferably have an understanding of the planning system including planning policy and guidance, development management work and survey standards, and possess a strong customer focus.

An appropriate environmental degree, or equivalent, and full UK driving licence is essential. Survey licences for bats and great crested newts is desirable.

The post is offered on a full-time basis but flexible working arrangements can be discussed. Hybrid working is offered but site visits in the borough will be required and a presence in the office is expected up to two days per week.
