Natural England

Field Surveyor

Fixed Term Appointment until 31 March 2024

Are you passionate about nature conservation and the outdoors, have an eye for detail and want to play a part in shaping how we use the land to tackle climate change? Then we’ve got the job for you!

We are looking for Field Surveyors to join our team in delivering an exciting, innovative new £12.5m pilot project, led by Natural England partnering with the Environment Agency, Royal Botanic Gardens Kew and the Forestry Commission. This pioneering project will test approaches to creating and restoring natural habitats in ways that tackle the twin challenges of climate change and biodiversity loss. Working with land managers in a small number of pilot areas, it will build the scientific evidence on carbon uptake and storage and develop ways of integrating nature-based solutions (NbS) with other land management objectives.

This is a great opportunity for people looking to build a career in environmental research or management. You will get experience of fieldwork in range of different places across the country and, learn both about how land is managed, whilst being at the cutting edge of developments to deliver net zero greenhouse gas emissions and the recovery of nature.

Applicants will typically have expertise in one of these areas:

  • soil sampling, monitoring, analysis
  • measurement of greenhouse gas fluxes
  • analysis of carbon storage in soils and vegetation
  • vegetation survey and monitoring

The role will incorporate the following tasks. Training and support will be provided:

  • Evaluate the carbon stored and sequestered by Nature-based Solutions interventions.
  • Carry out basic ecological surveys, including habitat mapping, and recording species.
  • Data entry and basic analyses using a range of digital capture tools.
  • Documentation and marking of permanent sample plots.
  • Archiving of sample material.
  • Take responsibility for safe working in the field including risk assessment.
  • Contribute to reviewing methods and explore opportunities for improvements, enhancements and/or innovations in delivering NbS at the landscape scale in conjunction with the Principal/Senior Specialist and key partners.
  • Build good working relationships with local partners, including landowners and managers

We welcome and encourage applications from all communities and, wherever possible, we accommodate requests for both full and part-time hours and other flexible working patterns.

If you’re inspired by the project and want to work for a leading science led organisation, apply here.

Closing Date: 23/05/2022  Location: Opportunities nationwide
