Field Ornithologist

The Wildlife Survey Unit Ltd are looking for an experienced field ornithologist to assist with our portfolio of sites requiring bird surveys in 2026 and beyond. The company has been operating since 2009 and has built a reputation for high quality in field ecology surveys.
We require an experienced field ornithologist who:
- Is committed to excellence in field ornithology.
- Has good bird identification skills, particularly in relation to upland birds; raptors, divers, grouse and waders.
- Is able to demonstrate prior experience of standard bird survey techniques; Vantage Point Watches, Brown and Shepherd etc.
- Holds a full UK driving licence, with own car insured for business use.
- Is physically fit and comfortable working alone in remote/montane environments often in cold weather and able to follow defined safe systems of work and risk assessments.
- Is able to maintain confidentiality of clients, sites and rare breeding bird locations.
- Is able to stay away from home during the working week when required and able to work flexible hours including early mornings.
- Is committed to undertaking work in a sustainable carbon conscious manner.
Additional desirable criteria which would be beneficial to the role:
- A NatureScot Schedule 1 survey licence
Employment type: Full time and permanent, 40 hours a week with 30 days of leave per annum.
Location: The location of the job would be in the Highlands. You would be working from home and field-based. We are able to offer help with relocation where required.
Start date: Immediate
Salary: 28-32k depending on experience
