Forest Works Supervisor: West Forest of Dean

The work is varied and would suit a person who is self-motivated, well organised and able to demonstrate initiative to undertake tasks in a safe and efficient manner.

The West Dean team cover the West side of the Forest of Dean, the forests along the Wye Valley in Gloucestershire and up into Herefordshire and are based at the main office in Coleford. The Beat is led by a Beat Forester supported by a team of eleven staff who are responsible for all aspects of woodland management, timber sales & contract management, community engagement and wildlife management.

Job description

The postholder will support the Beat Forester in planning and implementing all aspects of woodland management including:

  • Tree safety work - surveys, contractor supervision
  • Restock and establishment management work (planting, weeding, cleaning)
  • Timber Harvesting including mensuration/tariffing, contract supervision & marketing with a focus on tree disease when required.
  • Directly employed staff
  • Recreation and Ecology maintenance and enhancement work


You will supervise a small team of dedicated craftspeople as well as a wide range of specialist contractors, and you will ensure that work meets contract specifications, safety standards, timescales and delivers value for money.

Person specification

The candidate is required to demonstrate one or more of the following:

  1. Forestry or other relevant Land Management qualification to HND level or equivalent.
  2. Relevant work experience which is evidenced by a proven track record in successfully planning and supervising forest operations.
  3. Extensive practical experience, which is evidenced by holding practical certificates of competence in forestry skills.



ESSENTIAL

Essential Professional and Technical experience:

  • Experience of working in a forest or equivalent land-based environment.
  • A good understanding of Health & Safety in the workplace.
  • Ability to work effectively both alone and as part of a team.
  • A proven track record of supervising staff or volunteers and working in a team.
  • Knowledge and understanding of industry standards and best practice.
  • Competence with a wide range of IT applications including Microsoft Office Applications.
  • Excellent communication skills.
  • A GCSE in Maths and English or equivalent qualification
