The woodlands are important for timber production and conservation, with a large proportion of the landholding designated a Site of Special Scientific Interest (SSSI) and offer opportunities for a wide range of recreation from the informal use of open access woodland to the adventurous play and trails at three Forest Centres at Bedgebury, Wendover and High Lodge.
Forestry England is a progressive and inclusive organisation, where benefits include a generous holiday entitlement, substantial training, development, and volunteering opportunities, as well as flexible working arrangements and membership of an excellent civil service pension scheme. Our staff work in and among some of the most diverse and spectacular natural environments in England.
Job description
As the Civil Engineer Works Supervisor, you will work as part of a small civil engineering team covering East England Forest District. You will assist the Engineers in the planning and monitoring of civil engineering projects delivered by contractors in a forestry environment, including the construction, inspection and maintenance of civil engineering and recreation assets such as forest roads, recreational trails, play features, car parks and bridges. The successful candidate will be managed and mentored by the Civil Engineer and will be primarily deployed to undertake site visits to support the planning of civil engineering operations and to undertake contractor monitoring, including the monitoring of delivery against the contract specification and health and safety standards.
The East England Forest District Civil Engineering team currently consists of an Area Engineer, Civil Engineer, a Works Supervisor (Covering East Anglia) and an Administrative Assistant, who plan, co-ordinate and monitor the delivery of the Civil Engineering program through framework contract holders. The successful candidate would be joining as a second Works Supervisor to meet program demands and would work across the forest district, primarily focusing on the Southeast of England, London and Essex, and the Chilterns area. The reporting point for the role would be our Thames Chase sub office near Upminster (RM14 3NS), Bedgebury sub office (TN17 2SL) or Wendover (HP22 5NF) or an agreed home base in a central location. The East England team is supported by national colleagues including the Head of Civil Engineering for Forestry England, a Bridges and Structures Engineer and a Dams and Water Engineer, as well as a network of Civil Engineer teams across six districts in England.
The role involves daily travel within the district and some nights away should be expected to use time effectively and to meet early appointments. A Forestry England vehicle will be provided for business use only.
