This project is part of the Partnerships for Nature (P4N) programme led by the North Wessex Downs National Landscape and funded by Defra’s Species Survival Fund. The fund was developed by Defra and its Arm\'s-Length Bodies. It is being delivered by The National Lottery Heritage Fund with Natural England and the Environment Agency. See Partnerships for Nature.

The role

This new post is a key part of the P4N delivery, initially until February 2026. It requires:

  • Organising and delivering a practical work programme to enhance and expand the largest and most significant area of heathland in the North Wessex Downs.
  • Overseeing the introduction and husbandry of conservation grazing with traditional breed cattle in a wood pasture environment.
  • Liaising with contractors and members of the community.
  • Motivating and building a volunteer ‘Friends of Bucklebury Common’ network.

We are looking for someone with

  • Significant experience in applied land management and practical conservation who can make a lasting contribution in a tight timescale.
  • Experience of managing contractors, delivering practical work safely in a timely manner, and working with volunteers.
  • All the necessary practical certificates (chainsaw, first-aid, trailer, etc.)
  • The ability to manage your workload well, report effectively, and work to the landowner and funder’s requirements.

Overall, someone with initiative, who is self-sufficient, motivated, hard working with good communication skills.
