Job description

Role Description:

This National Nature Reserve (NNR) Area Senior Adviser role covers the Wessex (Avon, Dorset, Somerset, Wiltshire) Area Team. Wessex holds some of the country’s most important and iconic NNRs including the landscape scale Purbeck Heaths NNR and Somerset Wetlands NNR in Dorset and Somerset and ambitions for further landscape scale NNRs in Avon and Wiltshire.

This Senior Advisor role is primarily responsible for the leadership, coordination and support of delivery across Wessex NNRs, working in partnership and developing exciting new opportunities to help connect NNRs to over 2 million people resident across the area.

You will work closely with other NNR Area Senior Advisers, national NNR Operations Team as part of the NNR Senior Leadership Group. Acting as the bridge between national policy, overview/management of NE’s NNR Estate and Area Team NNR Operation and Delivery. You will also play a key role within the Wessex leadership team; depending on your experience and aspirations there will be opportunities to take on wider leadership responsibilities.

Key Responsibilities

  • Establishing clear leadership and an inspirational vision for National Nature Reserve delivery within Wessex, and roles of Wessex NNRs in delivery of nature recovery and connecting people with nature.
  • NNR Strategy implementation, set strategic direction for Wessex NNRs with clear NNR priorities for the team linking to NNR Strategy and Natural England (NE) Action Plan
  • Manage the declaration of new and extended NNRs across the Area Team.
  • Co-ordinate effective management planning across Wessex NNRs and manage the delivery programme of Wessex NNR projects. Oversee annual NNR budget and business planning process; provide advice and quality assurance on project prioritisation; and ensure awareness and capitalising of any in year funding opportunities that may arise.
  • Defra Capital planning process, confirming priorities, preparing and supporting NNR teams for capital infrastructure project delivery.
  • Ensure Wessex NNR estate as a safe place to work and visit. Support H&S responsibilities for staff, volunteers and visitors.
  • Support and develop local strategic NNR partnerships, including our NNR Approved Body partners.
  • Act as NNR technical lead for Wessex including on NNR strategy, management standard, H&S guidance, declarations.
  • Provide NNR support, coaching, learning and development to NNR staff and wider team.
  • Income generation and commercial development programmes
  • Strategic monitoring and review of NNR
  • Be an active member of the Wessex leadership team and national NNR team.
