Location: Base Office Location to be agreed with appointed roleholder, expected to travel to any of our sites in the South West and attend Trust main office at Roadford Lake, Devon regularly as required


  • As part of the Leadership Team you will drive the future strategy and development of all angling (coarse and game) businesses ensuring charitable and financial targets are met or exceeded.
  • You will lead our mission to care for natural and historic environments, providing health, social and wellbeing benefits for individuals and communities.

Role Profile:

  • Seek, develop and implement new angling business activity for South West lakes Limited. Manage current business, ensuring continuous improvement and increasing contribution.
  • Build the reputation of South West Lakes as pre-eminent operator of recreational fisheries
  • Identify, investigate, secure and bring on line new opportunities (contracts, businesses or funding) - primarily within the trading subsidiary. Ensure they make a net contribution to profits and or charitable impacts.
  • Lead and be the Trust wide expert in Angling. Ensure new and existing initiatives can be monitored for profitability and impact.
  • Engage the regional and national angling bodies, identify market opportunities through meetings, networking and other channels.
  • During project / product rollout and times of peak demand, provide operational support, mentoring and training.
  • Maximise sales through customer intelligence / interaction and conversion process improvements. Assist in sales marketing of our fisheries.
  • Support departments to identify, design and implement improvements to products and assist in the development of business cases for change as appropriate.
  • Work with the Visitor Experience Director and his team to ensure fishing is developed in harmony with other visitor needs, you will work especially closely with the Visitor Experience Manager Tamar (coarse premier site) and Visitor Experience Manager Dartmoor (game speciality) along with other new and developing angling assets.

  • Given the variety of internal and external stakeholders you’ll be engaging with, it is vitally important that you have excellent interpersonal, communication and influencing skills along with proven experience in a sales driven environment.
  • You will be a decision maker and leader, keen to succeed, and willing to push to achieve more. Confident to communicate at all levels you will also be able to deliver concise reports to the charity boards.
  • You are passionate about fishing and the outdoors. You will understand the variety of benefits that both bring to people.

Knowledge, Experience and Skills

  • Proven knowledge, reputation and hands on experience of a commercial recreational fishing operation.
  • Understanding and translating a strategic vision into commercial success. Demonstrable experience of delivering business and charitable growth
  • Successfully inspiring teams and demonstrating delivery in collaboration with others.
  • Experience of robust, effective and efficient budget management with attention to key indicators to monitor financial performance.
  • You will have identified opportunities and helped deliver effective marketing campaigns along with developing and delivering a great fishing experiences.
  • IT literate, particularly with Microsoft Office packages including Word, Excel, and Outlook
  • Knowledge and experience engaging with social media and website communication platforms

  • Educated to degree level, preferably in business development or business management subjects, or demonstrable track record.
  • Angling or fisheries management qualification (or proven reputation and experience)
  • Full and valid driving licence.

As an independent charity, our purpose is to protect special places for people and wildlife; in doing this we care for over 40 inland waters in Cornwall, Devon, Somerset and Dorset. Ranging in size from one to nine hundred acres, the lakes provide unrivalled access to watersports, angling, walking and cycling, and are places you can be active or play and explore all day long.
