The Forestry Commission is the government department that creates and manages the nation’s forests, encourages forestry on private estates, and carries out forestry research, development, and education.
Forestry England is part of the Forestry Commission. We manage England’s beautiful, diverse and productive, publicly owned woods and forests. These extend to over 250,000 hectares, making us the largest single land manager in England. We are shaping landscapes for the nation.
We are the largest provider of home-grown, sustainably produced timber in England, selling around 1.4 million tonnes per year, nearly half the English-grown annual supply.
Our forests host 230million visits each year, providing memorable experiences from live music and iconic arts projects to mountain biking, dog walking and Gruffalo spotting. We generate income from over 500 commercial partnerships and letting land and buildings.
The successful candidates will undertake the Forest Operative level 2 apprenticeship which will deliver a combination of industry recognised formal training and the opportunity to consolidate learning and knowledge by working within a Forest District or Recreation work team on a wide range of tasks.
An apprenticeship is a job with training, therefore the primary responsibilities for the post holder will be working with other team members to maintain and enhance the Forestry England estate using a range of practical and countryside skills including chainsaw/clearing saw work, grass strimming, fencing, planting, herbicide application, path maintenance and basic surveying.
These roles offer the right people an opportunity to gain solid experience of delivering core programmes in a productive forest or Forestry England Recreation site, whilst developing the skills and knowledge base for a career in forestry.
