As a Ranger, you’re the heart and soul of the National Trust in the landscapes we protect. You’re a champion of nature conservation and the great outdoors, and you’ll play a crucial role in keeping the nation’s beloved countryside and coast in good shape, for wildlife and for people.

The North Devon Portfolio has one of the most diverse landscapes in Britain, from deep wooded valleys of temperate rainforest to high sea cliffs, from wildflower meadows to sand dunes.

Based in Woolacombe, part of the Morte Estate stretching from Croyde to Ilfracombe, you would be joining an ambitious team who are working to create a more resilient and dynamic landscape in the face of the nature and climate emergency. This includes the planting of trees, restoring species rich grassland, conservation grazing and trialling techniques to slow water flows and reconnect watercourses with their floodplains.

Delivering our nature ambitions is a key aspect of the role. North Devon is one of 17 properties the National Trust has identified as having the greatest potential to deliver huge positive changes for nature across the country. In support of the Lead Ranger you will use your experience and passion for nature and habitat management to lead our ambitious nature recovery plans across the property. You will be working in partnership with our farmers to deliver innovative conservation grazing systems to deliver the maximum for nature. You will ensure our compliance and risk processes are robust and up to date to enable us to deliver the best for nature and people in and effective and safe way. The role will also have line management responsibility for 2 Assistant Rangers.

Who we’re looking for

  • demonstrate a passion for nature, heritage and the outdoors

  • have strong habitat and wildlife identification skills and an in-depth understanding of land management
  • A good understanding of compliance and risk in the countryside with an ability to undertake compliance and risk management tasks to a high standard
  • Strong organisational skills, able to work independently, prioritising and managing your work and competing demands on your time
  • A full UK driving licence and competence with, and relevant qualifications for the use of machinery and equipment (e.g., chainsaw, tractor, brushcutter etc).
