The Conservation Volunteers

Senior Project Officer

Every day TCV works across the UK to create healthier and happier communities for everyone - communities where our activities have a lasting impact on people's health, prospects and outdoor places.

About the role:

Green Gyms are fun and free outdoor sessions where volunteers are guided in practical activities such as planting trees, sowing meadows and establishing wildlife ponds.

Unlike other conservation projects, the emphasis is very much on health and fitness – sessions are short, volunteers warm up and cool down in preparation for a range of light to vigorous activities to suit all abilities.

TCV are partners with the London Borough of Hounslow, delivering activities which connect people and greenspace. The successful applicant for this role will be continuing to work with the London Borough of Hounslow representatives and local people, with the aim of increasing participant’s health and wellbeing through social engagement, gentle exercise and connectivity with the outdoors.

For this role, TCV are seeking an enthusiastic, adaptable and committed person to join our London Health & Education team for this important position of Senior Project Officer. This post holder will have the primary role of leading the delivery of three TCV Green Gyms each week at Jersey Gardens (Tuesdays), Thornbury Park (Wednesdays) & Redlees Park (Thursdays) in Hounslow.

The post holder will actively seek new volunteers to attend TCV’s Green Gyms, through continual engagement with local social prescribing partner referrals, local community groups, social media & putting up posters in the local community. They will also continually recruit and train volunteers to ensure they have the maximum opportunity to develop their skills and experience.

The post holder will mainly deliver core activities independently, although they’ll work closely with the existing TCV Health & Education team & colleagues in the Hounslow & Richmond area, to ensure local people receive the best possible experience.

The successful applicant will meet regularly with local parks staff to identify tasks for the Green Gym. They will have experience of working with communities and a good knowledge of the outdoors & nature conservation. They must be able to plan & deliver practical nature conservation projects with volunteers, including ordering materials and other logistics.

They must be able to demonstrate an understanding of a range of practical activities, experience & confidence in supervising groups of volunteers, an ability to communicate effectively with people with varying abilities and levels of influence, together with personal qualities of intuition, resourcefulness and flexibility.

The post is full-time for 35 hours per week, for a fixed period until 31st March 2023. After that date, there is the potential to continue reduced Green Gym activity, for 21 hours a week, until 31st March 2024. The post will be administered from/based the ETNA Community Centre in Twickenham, although there is the potential for flexible working to perform administrative tasks from home on Mondays & Fridays. The practical outdoor Green Gyms will be held every Tuesday, Wednesday & Thursday, from 10.45am – 2pm. There will be regular travel across Hounslow, monthly team meetings in central London or other TCV London sites.
