Contract Type: Fixed Term Contract / Full Time

Salary: £37,000pa

This is a brand new unique role where you can really make a true meaningful difference for woodland creation / climate action.

We need to act quickly to tackle the worst consequences of the climate crisis and global warming driven by carbon dioxide emissions. As one of the UK's single biggest private landowners we're in a strong position to help. Planting and establishing more trees will capture carbon from the atmosphere as they grow.

Our approach to tree establishment ensures we maximise the benefit for people and nature, as well as locking up carbon. We'll establish new hedgerows and woodlands as well as creating innovative agroforestry projects and restoring historic wood pasture and orchards – and increasing tree cover in other settings.

Caring for a significant portion of the Lake District World Heritage Site we recognise the need for action and the complexities of delivering credible woodland work within this sensitive, complex and much-loved landscape. That’s why we have created this new role as part of our Treescapes project to work closely with our operational team and key partners.

It is going to take a unique person with technical woodland knowledge, great engagement skills and a good understanding of the bigger picture to help us have real impact here. If you are that person please do apply……..

If you have any questions about this role please contact:

Interviews will be held on 7th February.

What you'll be doing

Success in this role will be:

Year 1

  • Working with our regional Trees & Woodlands Adviser, national specialists and our local countryside teams to develop the strategy and vision for trees and woodland creation in the Lakes, particularly tree planting and woodland creation as part of emerging nature priority work.
  • Identifying funding opportunities, potential partnerships and initiating applications for tree planting and woodland creation projects

Year 2 and 3

  • Continue to work with properties to develop and initiate plans for tree planting and woodland creation, delivering the agreed NT nature priority work
  • Tree planting operations on some woodland creation projects should start to happen at scale. The Woodland Creation officer will take a leading role in delivering this work
  • Implement suitable identified funding opportunities / bids

Year 3 onward

  • Our ambition is that this work will continue on an externally ‘self-funded’ basis beyond the initial project period however we will need to review this in Year 2.
