Estate Ranger


Penicuik Estate is seeking a new Estate Ranger to join its growing team. This position offers an exciting outdoor role, working within the outstanding Penicuik Designed Landscape and beautifully preserved Old Penicuik House.

The family run Estate, which is located 10 miles south of Edinburgh, welcomes in excess of 100,000 visitors each year and operates as diversified rural business comprising hospitality, real estate, farming, forestry and renewables. This position offers a varied and fulfilling role working with a small and passionate team with a progressive vision for heritage, land and environmental management.

The successful candidate is required to have extensive experience of working in the countryside and a detailed knowledge of countryside management, in particular; habitat management, the Scottish Outdoor Access Code, rural legislation, compliance and health & safety. The candidate is also required to have extensive practical skills for a wide variety of estate grounds maintenance and forestry tasks and good organisational skills to efficiently complete routine and new tasks. Strong communication skills are vital as the candidate will be the Estate's

representative relating to the thousands of visitors throughout the year together with responsibility for coordinating and leading volunteer groups, local interest groups, educational and heritage tours and a range of outdoor experiences and activities.

Whilst the successful candidate will be part of the Estate team, reporting to the Estate Manager, the role will allow a high degree autonomy. It is therefore essential that the candidate is proactive and self-motivating with initiative to effectively manage the varied and constantly evolving demands of the role.


  • Full time: 40 hrs per week
  • Workdays are Friday, Saturday, Sunday and two other flexi-days within the remaining weekdays
  • It is anticipated that there will be a requirement for some evening shifts from time to time, particularly during the summer months and to work bank holidays.
  • Please note that this predominantly an outdoor role.


  • £20,000 per annum + company pension
  • Onsite residential accommodation (2 bedroom Estate lodge) included in package unless candidate is local.

  • Extensive prior relevant or transferable experience
  • A full and clean driving license
