Location: Caldey Island, Pembrokeshire, Wales
£18,047 – £26,812 per annum (depending on experience)
Fixed-term, 37.5 hours per week, from 1 March to 1 November, with potential for renewal.
Live-on Island, (Accommodation provided)

This role offers a rare opportunity to live and work on Caldey Island, contributing directly to the care of its landscapes, biodiversity, and visitor experience.

Role Purpose

The Practical Conservation Ranger will be responsible for carrying out hands-on conservation and estate management tasks across Caldey Island. The post-holder will also coordinate volunteer work programmes, support the day-to-day running of the visitor operation, and play a key role in maintaining the balance between conservation, community, and tourism.

Key Responsibilities

  • Practical Conservation & Land Management
  • Undertake a range of practical habitat management tasks including grassland, woodland, and coastal habitat maintenance.
  • Carry out routine estate maintenance including paths, fencing, and signage.
  • Monitor wildlife and habitats, contributing to biodiversity records and habitat management plans.
  • Support the delivery of species conservation projects in partnership with external organisations.
  • Ensure compliance with environmental and health & safety standards.


    Volunteer Management

    • Recruit, train, and supervise volunteers to assist with conservation and maintenance activities.
    • Develop and deliver engaging volunteer days, ensuring safety and inclusion.
    • Foster a positive, team-oriented environment that supports learning and engagement.


      Visitor Operations & Community Engagement

      • Support the operation of the island’s visitor facilities and assist with day-to-day visitor management.
      • Engage with visitors, providing information about the island’s natural and cultural heritage.
      • Contribute to interpretation and educational initiatives that promote understanding of Caldey’s environment and heritage.


        Administration & Reporting

        • Maintain accurate records of conservation work, volunteer activity, and visitor engagement.
        • Assist with grant reporting, project proposals, and environmental monitoring data.
        • Support event coordination, communications, and social media updates related to conservation work.


          Person Specification

          Essential

          • Proven experience in practical habitat management, countryside management, or similar fields.
          • Experience leading or coordinating volunteers or work parties.
          • Sound understanding of UK conservation principles and habitat types.
          • Physically fit and comfortable working outdoors in all weathers.
          • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills.
          • Ability to work independently and as part of a small, close-knit team.
          • Full driving licence (and willingness to use utility vehicles or boats if required).
          • DBS check required


            Desirable

            • Qualification in Countryside Management, Environmental Conservation, or related discipline.
            • Experience of working in island, remote, or protected landscapes.
            • First Aid and/or chainsaw/brushcutter certification.
            • Knowledge of Pembrokeshire’s wildlife, habitats, and visitor landscape.
            • Experience in public engagement or environmental education.


              Additional Information

              This is a hands-on, practical role requiring flexibility and a collaborative attitude. The post-holder will live and work as part of the island community, with transport to and from the mainland provided. Weekend and bank holiday work may be required during the visitor season.
