Area Ranger

Location: North Devon, Arlington Court, Arlington, EX31 4LP

Contract Type: Full Time / Fixed Term 24 months

Reference: IRC147750

Closing Date: 25 February

Salary: £26,169

What it's like to work here

You would be joining ambitious Ranger and Project Teams, who are working to break the hard lines between monocultured habitats, softening edges and creating a more mosaiced, and dynamic landscape. This includes the planting of trees, encouraging species rich grassland and trailing techniques to slow water flows and reconnect watercourses with their floodplains.

What you'll be doing

The main thrust of this role will focus upon developing and delivering an exciting and sustainable monitoring and survey programme, which forms part of our Landscape Recovery Scheme. You will be working across the Arlington Estate and with local private landowners to help us understand what we already have, and documenting how it changes with differing management. The surveys and monitoring that you conduct will span a wide array of elements, designed by you, which could include grasslands, birds, bats, and invasive species. Additionally, and working with Project Managers and our Wildlife Advisor, you will be responsible for undertaking the surveys necessary to ensure enrolment in new initiatives such as Biodiversity Net Gain and the Woodland Carbon Code. You will be recording your findings systematically, developing survey plans and programmes, and utilising your data to draw conclusions; exploring how our changing management is impacting habitats.

Because this role covers an expansive scope, delivery will not be possible without help contractors. You will have the necessary skills to find and employ appropriately skilled and qualified people.

A full UK drivers licence will be required.

Who we're looking for

We’d love to hear from you if you have:·

  • hands-on experience of species monitoring across a range of species groups
  • thirst for leadership and a will to work as part of a thriving team
  • understanding of a range of habitat assessment methods e.g NVC and UKHAB
  • capability and willingness to manage small teams of staff and volunteers
  • ability to design and implement creative and sustainable monitoring programmes
  • strong knowledge and understanding of conservation land management principles and practice for both habitats and species
  • experience and ability to record and interpret survey work
  • an understanding of risk and contractor management
