Biodiversity Management and Policy Officer

Economy, Natural Resources and Sustainability

Biodiversity Management and Policy Officer

£29,636 - £31,371 per annum

37 hours per week

Bridgend County Borough has a wealth of biodiversity with many rare and locally significant plants, animals, insects and other species. The Local Biodiversity Action Plan 2014 shows why the rich biodiversity of the County Borough of Bridgend is so important and how it supplies a wealth of different benefits to the environment, people and the economy of the area.

A new Biodiversity Duty is included in the Environment (Wales) Act 2016 which enhances the previous duty placed on Bridgend County Borough Council (BCBC). The previous duty focused largely, although not exclusively, on preserving biodiversity. The new duty in addition to that requires BCBC to enhance biodiversity and increase the resilience of ecosystems, signalling a change from reactive, to proactive intervention.

BCBC will require a greater organisation-wide understanding and capacity than has previously been the case and in April 2018 a Biodiversity and Ecosystems Resilience Forward Plan, 2018-2022, was approved, followed by in June 2018 by a Tree Management Policy.

The role will provide strategic and operational support to create more effective working practices for the delivery of Council priorities in line with legislation, including the Future Generations Act (Wales) (2015), Planning Act (Wales) (2015) and Environment Act (Wales) (2016).

The post holder will provide expert advice and guidance on issues arising from legislation, to forecast requirements and enable the Council to provide timely and robust responses to legislation, and to represent the Council at a local, regional and national level. It will assist the Countryside Management Officer to positively contribute to the land use planning process and the management of the Council’s protected landscapes.

If you are interested in the role please call 01656 815333 for an informal discussion.

Closing Date: Wednesday 26th February 2020
