About us

The climate and nature crises require comprehensive, bold solutions and urgent action in order to reverse the accelerating decline that nature and society now face. In response, Dartmoor National Park Authority (DNPA) has recently launched an ambitious new nature enhancement strategy based around the restoration of natural processes at a catchment scale.

Core to this is the health of Dartmoor’s rivers, peatlands and wetlands, which we are aiming to enhance for multiple environmental and societal benefits through the Southwest Peatland Partnership Dartmoor Headwaters Programme. This represents the next phase of an ambitious initiative funded principally by Natural England to restore the blanket bogs and mires across the south west’s three largest moorlands: Dartmoor, Exmoor and Bodmin Moor.

The post holder will work as part of the DNPA Headwaters team and part of a wider Southwest Water delivery team that work across the three moors.

The Dartmoor Headwaters Officer will ensure historical features are identified, recorded and conserved as part of a team restoring natural processes in the headwaters of priority catchments in line with SWPP aims and Dartmoor’s Nature Enhancement pledge. They will carry out surveys, conduct fieldwork and provide specialist advice, identifying and enhancing the significant historic environment where possible and mitigating against any unintentional detrimental impacts that could arise from improvements to the natural environment.

The post holder will will work closely with specialists, landowners and commoners to develop detailed restoration plans tailored to each site. The Officer will work with the team to produce specifications and tender documents and recruit and manage contractors in line with agreed plans. They will promote and advocate the project to a range of audiences and communicate the benefits and effects of the restoration programme.
