Assistant Arboricultural Consultant

Maydencroft is looking for an Assistant Arboricultural Consultant to primarily support the delivery of tree safety inspections across a portfolio of utility sites in the Thames Valley region.

This is an excellent opportunity for someone with a strong arboricultural background who is looking to develop their consultancy career. The role is primarily field-based, with occasional attendance at our regional offices, and would suit someone moving from practical arboriculture, tree surveying or a junior consultancy role.

Applicants should either already hold the Lantra Professional Tree Inspection (PTI) qualification or be willing to complete the course and qualification within the first six months of employment. Where required, Maydencroft will provide funding, guidance and support through this process.

The successful candidate will receive structured support from Senior Arboricultural Consultants, with development towards independent consultancy work including tree safety inspections, report writing, client liaison and, where appropriate, BS 5837 project work.

The position will be largely remote, with occasional working from our regional offices in Dorney, near Windsor, and Letchworth Garden City, Hertfordshire.

Key responsibilities

As an Assistant Arboricultural Consultant for Maydencroft Limited, your principal role will include the following:

• Undertaking an ongoing programme of tree safety inspections for utility sites throughout the Thames Valley region;
• Assessing tree health, structural condition, defects, site usage and risk, and recording findings accurately;
• Preparing clear and proportionate remedial work recommendations with appropriate priorities and timescales;
• Using tree management software in the field and maintaining accurate survey data;
• Working with Maydencroft's arboricultural teams to support the practical delivery of recommended works;
• Liaising professionally with utility client representatives, landowners and site managers as required;
• Supporting the wider consultancy team with project administration, report preparation and contract delivery;
• Maintaining safe working practices when accessing sites and following health, safety, environmental and biosecurity procedures at all times.
• Formal arboricultural qualification (e.g. Level 3 Arboriculture, National Diploma or equivalent), or demonstrable equivalent industry experience;
• Lantra Professional Tree Inspection qualification, or willingness to achieve this within the first six months of employment;
• Good all-round arboricultural knowledge, including tree identification, common defects, pests and diseases and basic tree risk assessment;
• Good written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to produce accurate survey records;
• Ability to work independently in the field while following agreed procedures and seeking support when required;
• Competence using tablets or mobile devices, and willingness to use tree management software;
• Full, clean UK driving licence and willingness to travel as required.
• Higher qualification, such as a degree or Level 4 Arboriculture;
• Practical arboricultural experience, tree surveying experience or previous junior consultancy experience;
• Experience working on or around utility sites (power, gas, telecoms or water);
• Previous use of tree management software such as EzytreeV, Arbortrack, OTISS or PocketGIS;
• Experience preparing reports, survey schedules or mapping outputs;
• Membership of the Arboricultural Association or another relevant professional body;
• Good IT skills, including Microsoft Office and digital data capture;
• Awareness of ecology, protected species and their relevance to arboricultural works;
• First Aid certification and relevant utility site safety training (e.g. EUSR).

The workplace

The position will largely be remote, with occasional working from our offices at Pigeon House Farm, Dorney, Windsor, SL4 6QB, and One Garden City, Letchworth Garden City, Hertfordshire, SG6 3BF.

Salary

Starting salary of between £29,000 and £32,000 per annum, dependent upon candidate experience. There is potential for a salary review following successful completion of probation and/or the Lantra Professional Tree Inspection qualification

Contract length

Permanent (subject to successful completion of a six-month probation period)

Working hours

Standard working hours are 40 hours per week, Monday to Friday, with flexible start and finish times available by agreement.
