Maydencroft is looking for an Arboricultural Consultant to join our growing consultancy team in the Southeast. This varied role will cover tree safety inspections, BS 5837 surveys and reports, detailed tree condition assessments and client advisory work across commercial, public sector, utility, private estate and charity clients.

The role would suit a confident, commercially aware consultant who enjoys fieldwork, technical reporting, client liaison and practical arboricultural problem-solving. You will be supported by an experienced senior team while being trusted to manage your own projects and client relationships.

The position can be based from either of our regional offices in Letchworth Garden City, Hertfordshire, or Dorney, near Windsor, Berkshire, with flexible working arrangements available depending on project requirements.

Key responsibilities

As an Arboricultural Consultant for Maydencroft Limited, your principal role will include the following:

  • Delivering BS 5837 arboricultural surveys, reports and associated advice for planning and development projects;
  • Delivering and managing tree safety inspection contracts across utility, private, public and charity sector clients;
  • Undertaking detailed tree surveys and condition assessments, including tree health, structure, stability and risk;
  • Preparing clear and proportionate remedial work recommendations, including appropriate priorities and timescales;
  • Using tree management software in the field and preparing client-ready reports and schedules;
  • Working with Maydencroft's operational arboricultural teams to support the practical delivery of recommended works;
  • Liaising professionally with clients, landowners, site managers and other stakeholders as required;
  • Supporting the wider consultancy team with project delivery, quality assurance and technical input;
  • Maintaining safe working practices and following health, safety, environmental and biosecurity procedures at all times;
  • Undertaking arboricultural clerk of works duties for development projects;
  • Assisting with PiCUS and Resistograph investigations, where required.

Core skills and requirements

  • Lantra Professional Tree Inspection qualification;
  • A minimum of three years' professional experience within arboricultural consultancy;
  • Formal arboricultural qualification (e.g. Level 4 Arboriculture, National Diploma or equivalent);
  • Experience undertaking BS 5837 surveys and preparing associated reports;
  • Good all-round arboricultural knowledge, including tree biology, defects, pests, diseases and risk management;
  • Experience using tree management software and preparing clear written reports;
  • Strong communication skills, with the confidence to liaise directly with clients and stakeholders;
  • Confident project delivery skills, including the ability to work within agreed scopes, budgets and timescales;
  • Full, clean UK driving licence and willingness to travel as required.
  • Ability to work independently, manage time effectively and maintain high standards of data accuracy.

Desirable skills / qualifications

  • Higher qualification, such as a degree in arboriculture or a related subject;
  • Experience working on or around utility sites (power, gas, telecoms or water);
  • Proficiency in AutoCAD or similar mapping software;
  • Experience preparing detailed condition, decay detection or arboricultural clerk of works reports;
  • Membership of the Arboricultural Association or another relevant professional body;
  • Strong IT skills, including report writing, data management and mapping outputs;
  • Awareness of ecology, protected species and relevant arboricultural and ecological constraints;
  • First Aid certification and relevant utility site safety training (e.g. EUSR).

The workplace

The position can be based from either One Garden City, Letchworth Garden City, Hertfordshire, SG6 3BF, or Pigeon House Farm, Dorney, Windsor, SL4 6QB, with flexible working arrangements available depending on project requirements.

Salary

Starting salary of between £35,000 and £41,000 per annum, dependent upon candidate experience, qualifications and demonstrable consultancy capability.

Contract length

Permanent (subject to successful completion of a six-month probation period)

Working hours

Standard working hours are 40 hours per week, Monday to Friday, with flexible start and finish times available by agreement.
