Contract: Fixed-term role until 28 February 2026, full-time for 37.5 hours per week

The RSPB reserves the right to extend or make this role permanent without further advertising dependent on business needs at the end of the contract term.

The North Kent Marshes team are looking for an enthusiastic, resilient and resourceful Assistant Warden to help deliver our conservation objectives across the four reserves on the Hoo Peninsula - Northward Hill, Cliffe Pools, Higham Marshes and Shorne Marshes.

The successful applicant will undertake a range of habitat management and species monitoring activities across the suite of reserves in North Kent. Ideally, you will have experience in grazing marsh and woodland habitat management as well as species monitoring in these habitats. This post will, undoubtedly, enhance and develop your skills and knowledge to progress your career.

Essential skills, knowledge and experience:

  • You will have knowledge and experience of practical habitat and estate management across grazing marsh, brackish and saline lagoons, woodland and scrub.
  • You will have a proven track record of working of completing work alone and working within a varied team.
  • Leading and inspiring the reserve’s volunteer team, including Residential and non-residential interns.
  • Good bird identification skills and experience of biological surveys.
  • Be willing to assist with predator control to benefit ground nesting birds.
  • Well organised approach to work including developing and effective prioritisation of workplans and workloads.
  • Full, manual driving licence that is valid in the UK.

Desirable qualifications, knowledge, skills and experience:

  • Lantra or equivalent qualification in using machinery, including; brushcutter, chainsaw, tractor, sit astride quad, PA1/6W pesticides.
  • Knowledge of servicing and maintaining vehicles, machinery, tools and equipment to agreed standards.
  • Experience of staff or volunteer recruitment and line management.
  • Implementing and updating health and safety records and assessments.

Additional information:

  • This role will involve lone working and working in remote locations.
  • This role will require occasional weekend, early morning and evening working so will need someone who is able to be flexible.
