Want to help some of the UK’s rarest habitats not only survive, but thrive? The South Downs West team are offering an immersive volunteer experience helping look after some of the most spectacular sites in the South Downs, including the highest point of the National Park, SSSI heathland, chalk downland, lowland meadow, and wet woodland created by beavers.
We’re looking for up to three enthusiastic people of any age or background to volunteer for up to 30 hours a week, for up to 12 months. It’s an ideal opportunity to gain training, skills and experience in countryside management – including machinery use and maintenance, fencing, species surveying, GIS, livestock management, and much more.
If needed, immersive volunteers can take advantage of purpose-built accommodation at Swan Barn Farm. “Speckled Wood” is a cruck-framed roundwood timber building insulated by straw bales, and heated by biomass that has been grown, harvested and processed on the sites we look after. As part of this sustainable lifestyle, volunteers can also maintain and enjoy the fruits of the chicken run, greenhouse, raised beds, orchards and beehives.
