Communications Manager – CLA South West

Salary: £35,000 - £40,000 per annum + benefits, depending on experience.
Contract: full time, permanent

The Country Land and Business Association (CLA) has been championing the interests of rural England and Wales for over 100 years. We campaign to grow the rural economy, strengthen rural communities and provide a greener future for the next generation – all whilst providing a first class service to our members.

Following the departure of a longstanding and valued team member from the region, the CLA is now looking for a Communications Manager in our South West Regional Office to play a key role in raising the profile of the organisation through targeted media engagement. You will have a nose for news and political nous, be proactive and thrive on autonomy and responsibility.

At an exciting and at times challenging phase for the rural sector, together with colleagues in the South West Office, other regional offices and the External Affairs department, you will work on issues that matter – climate change, biodiversity, job creation, business diversification, farming, private property rights, public access, a healthy and profitable rural economy.

Main responsibilities

  • Work with the Regional Director to create, develop, lead and implement a coordinated and proactive regional member, public and political relations strategy
  • Identify opportunities for news coverage and ensure that they land in the press
  • Act as the main South West Region contact and conduit for PR and Communications between national and regional offices
  • Produce, in liaison with advisory staff, and place articles on key issues affecting members into a range of publications and online
  • Prepare copy for the Land & Business magazine and other publications as required
  • Work with the Regional Team to promote regional and national events
  • Prepare and distribute regular member communications via email bulletins
  • Attending relevant shows, events and committee meetings
  • Developing and increase the impact of regional social media channels
  • Maintaining effective internal communication channels
  • Manage the South West section of the CLA Website
  • Work with colleagues in other Regional Offices, External Affairs, Marketing and the wider London Office team as required

Key skills and experience required

  • A track record in achieving media coverage at a local or national level
  • Excellent use of the English language
  • Excellent IT skills
  • Ability to write high-quality press releases and newspaper and magazine articles
  • Be passionate about the countryside
  • Demonstrate a comprehensive understanding on the key issues affecting rural businesses and communities
  • Demonstrate a proactive approach to PR and media relations with the ability and news judgment to find and place good stories
  • Understand that working as part of a small, diverse and multidisciplinary team there will be the need to pitch in and help with the wider office duties. A can do attitude will be essential.

The Location, Team, and Working Arrangements

The role is based in Biddestone, near Chippenham in Wiltshire. We operate from a converted stable building set in the rural location which is bright and spacious. Some flexible working will be available on request but contact time in the office would be required each week for three days or more dependent on schedules, with a requirement to travel across the South West to unique and special landscapes. You will be working in a small, friendly team, who are very passionate about the organisation and rural affairs in general as well as being part of the CLA’s supportive team of over one hundred highly motivated individuals across England and Wales.
