Kent Wildlife Trust

Protected Area Warden (Sandwich & Pegwell Bay)

Salary Range: The salary for this post is up to £25,000 pro rata dependent on skills and experience.
Contract Type: Fixed term (one year), Job share (22.5 hours per week)
Location: Based at Discovery Park/Sandwich and Pegwell Bay NNR.

Kent’s wildlife needs to be restored to much higher levels. We can no longer allow common things to become rare. We can only do this by restoring large-scale habitat from degraded land. Doing this will contribute to solving global problems. But we won’t be able to do this unless we publicly aspire to a higher level of impact and show that we can deliver this.

The Job: Sandwich & Pegwell Bay NNR, covering some 635 ha [1570 acres] is composed of a complex of habitats including: inter-tidal flats, salt marsh, chalk cliffs and wave cut platform, beaches, sand dune, ancient dune pasture, scrubland and recently created grassland. The reserve is covered by a raft of protective designations including: SSSI, LNR, NNR, Ramsar, SPA and SAC. We are seeking a highly flexible, people-focussed Protected Area Warden to engage proactively and positively with visitors, local people, stakeholders and neighbours to protect the site and its wildlife from disturbance. This will be done through your development and delivery of an engagement programme of awareness raising activities that will increase understanding of the site’s importance and reduce the negative impact that visitor pressure is currently having.

You: With at least 3 years’ experience of people engagement and/or conservation project management work, you will have bags of self-motivation and a strong commitment to raising awareness through working with a wide range of people and community engagement. You will have experience of dealing with members of the public in both proactive and responsive situations, where your tact and diplomacy comes to the fore, and have good knowledge of nature conservation management, natural history and biological monitoring/surveying techniques.
